Education and Research Center on Communication and Writing Established

On November 15, Tianjin University (TJU) inaugurated its Education and Research Center on Communication and Writing. The ceremony was attended by Liu Xiuguo, Assistant to the President, Liu Kun, Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office, Liu Junqing, Deputy Director of the Liberal Arts Development Office, Lv Jing, Party Secretary of the School of Humanities and Arts, Wang Yongyuan, Director of the Center, and over 30 faculty members.

The center represents a collaborative effort by multiple university departments and schools, aiming to consolidate resources and expertise. It will focus on exploring innovative teaching methodologies in writing and communication, fostering interdisciplinary interactions among students and faculty, and promoting talent cultivation.

Liu Xiuguo extended his congratulations, highlighting the center's establishment as a significant milestone in TJU’s general education reform. He emphasized its role in addressing the modern demand for high-caliber talent development.

Lv Jing noted that since its founding in 2022, the School of Humanities and Arts has been committed to nurturing future-ready talent. She affirmed the school's continued support for the center's growth.

Liu Kun reviewed the evolution of general education at TJU, mentioning that the number of general elective courses has expanded from over 160 in 2019 to 463 by September 2024. He credited the School of Humanities and Arts for its substantial contributions, including two courses recognized as national first-class undergraduate courses. He expressed hope that the center would set a benchmark by integrating humanities with technology, cultivating exemplary educators, and producing high-quality teaching materials.

Liu Junqing praised the School of Humanities and Arts for its achievements in blending humanities with science and general education. He stressed the importance of leveraging the humanities' strengths, assembling excellent teaching resources, intensifying research, and encouraging collaborative team efforts. He advocated for integrating internal and external resources and employing diverse teaching strategies, including artificial intelligence, to ensure effective learning outcomes.

Wang Yongyuan outlined the center's organizational structure, responsibilities, and goals. He also presented the curriculum plan for the "Writing and Communication" course.

Shi Jing, Deputy Director of the Chinese Department, delivered a course research report. Liu Chao, Deputy Director of the Career Guidance Center, and Wang Jing, Associate Professor from the Chinese Department, shared their insights and expectations as faculty representatives.

During the ceremony, Wang Yongyuan and Zhou You discussed teaching assignments. Faculty members from various departments and the Chinese Department participated in an engaging dialogue.

In 2025, the center plans to pilot teaching initiatives in the School of Earth System Science, the Medical School, and the School of Microelectronics. Recruitment of teaching faculty is ongoing, and courses will be customized to meet the specific needs of different disciplines. The center aims to establish a distinctive general education curriculum that reflects the unique characteristics of Tianjin University.
